This study of the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell forms the anchor for this year’s course theme “DoubleThink”.
We will start the process by dedicating time to immersing ourselves in the novel by reading it thoroughly and building a personal response.
Embedded in the programme will be a study of the grammar of dystopian writing and an exploration of the wider genre. The companion texts will be Anthony Burgess’ “A Clockwork Orange” and Margaret Atwood’s “A Handmaid’s Tale”. We will see how these dystopian visions of the future are as important a moral injunction to be wary of the powerful forces in the world as ever.
Assessment opportunities attached to this novel are the External Paper NCEA 3.1, Exercises in dystopian writing for your writing folio NCEA 3.4 and the preparation and deliver of a speech challenging and questioning the motives of our present politicians and business leaders for NCEA 3.5
